Garage Door Opener Not Working? 7 Things to Check First
· 6 min read
A garage door opener that suddenly stops working is frustrating — but the cause isn't always a dead motor. Here are the 7 most common culprits, in order of how often we see them.
1. Dead Remote Battery
Sounds obvious, but it's our #1 service call. Try the wall button — if that works, replace the remote battery.
2. Misaligned Safety Sensors
Two small sensors near the floor must 'see' each other. If one is bumped, the door won't close. Wipe the lenses and check the LEDs are solid.
3. Disconnected Trolley
If someone pulled the red emergency cord, the opener arm is disconnected from the door. Re-engage by pulling the cord toward the door and running the opener.
4. Locked Mode
Many wall consoles have a 'Lock' button that disables remotes. Hold it for 2 seconds to unlock.
5. Broken Trolley or Gear
If the motor runs but the chain doesn't move, the internal gear may be stripped. Repairable in one visit.
6. Logic Board Failure
Power surges fry circuit boards. Replacement is often more cost-effective than repair on units older than 10 years.
7. Worn Out Motor
Openers last 12–15 years. If yours is older and dying, modern Wi-Fi belt-drive openers are quieter, safer, and smartphone-controlled.
