Why Won't My Garage Door Open? 10 Causes & Fast Fixes
· 7 min read
When your garage door refuses to open, the cause could be mechanical, electrical, or a simple oversight. Here are the 10 most frequent reasons we see in the field.
1. Broken Torsion Spring
By far the most common — listen for a loud bang and look for a visible gap in the spring.
2. Snapped Lift Cable
Cables fray over time. A broken cable will leave the door tilted on one side.
3. Door Off-Track
If the door jumped its track, do not try to force it. Bent tracks need professional realignment.
4. Blocked or Misaligned Sensors
A leaf, broom, or even sunlight glare can block the safety beam.
5. Dead Opener Motor
If the motor doesn't hum at all, check breakers and outlets first.
6. Frozen Door Seal
In cold climates, the bottom rubber seal can freeze to the concrete. Break the seal carefully and use a heat gun.
7. Locked Door
Side-mounted manual locks are easy to forget. Make sure the slide bolt is disengaged.
8. Tripped Travel Limits
If the opener thinks the door is already 'open,' it won't move. Limits need recalibration.
9. Worn Rollers
Cracked or rusty rollers create binding that overwhelms the opener.
10. Power Outage
Pull the red disconnect cord to operate manually until power returns.
